Herma UK, the British subsidiary of self-adhesive specialist Herma, conducted a charity fundraiser to raise money for medical research. In keeping with its tradition, the company focused on physical exertion, with a team of four completing a cycling, climbing and canoeing challenge in Wales.

After a Herma team cycled from its UK headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire, to the Labelexpo trade show in Brussels in 2013, the group tackled the three disciplines all at once this year. On June 27, the team of four completed the “Race The Sun” challenge in the Welsh Brecon Beacons national park, an area also used during the selection process for future British elite soldiers. The participants not only cycled a total of 45 miles, but they also climbed Pen y Fan, the highest summit in South Wales at 2,907ft, and canoed 3 km across Pontsticill Reservoir.

True to the name of the event, the total distance had to be covered between sunrise and sunset. During the event, 76 teams participated and raised more than £150,000 for Action Medical Research for Children. This organization funds medical research into diseases that affect children.

The Herma team raised £3,000 toward the total donations in advance. With a time of nine hours and two minutes, the team finished in 27th place. “And out of 27 mixed teams, we came in eighth – we are quite proud of that result,” says Colin Phillips, Herma UK’s managing director. “The weather was good for most of the day, except for a spot of rain. We safely reached the finish line and are now looking back on a great day for a very good cause – and a few sore muscles!”
